Born Erna Hehmke in 1905 in Breslau.

1924 : After finishing secondary school, she studies photochemistry at the University of Breslau.

1925 : the Hehmke-Winterer Photography Workshop opens in Düsseldorf. Trained in photography by co-owner Anne Winterer. Trainee exam. Further training at the Photography School of the Lette Union in Berlin and in the Studio Lorelle in Paris.

1932, diploma exam. Marriage to the architect Rudolf Wagner.

In 1935 following Anne Winterers withdrawal, Erna is the sole owner of the "Hehmke-Winterer Photography Workshop". Wide-ranging photographic activity concentrating on the fields of theatre photography (20s and 30s), industrial photography (30s to the 50s) and documentation covering various occupations (50s to the 70s).

In the studio, mainly portraits and still-lifes, as well as advertising photography.

Also other freelance photography: landscapes, children and "milieus".

Photos appear in numerous magazines and company publications. 1948-1950, extensive photo-series (commissioned by the Government of North-Rhine-Westphalia) on the work of the Parliamentary Council and the establishment of the Houses of Parliament (Bundestag and Bundesrat) in Bonn.

Undertakes numerous functions for the profession at large: Trains apprentices in own studio; teaches photography at a Düsseldorf vocational school; supervises apprentices; member of the examining board for trainee and diploma exams; board member and honorary member of the Photographers Guild.

Many awards: the gold and silver pins of the Guild, gold and silver medals at the "Gesolei" commercial exhibition in Düsseldorf in 1926 (with Anne Winterer) and the Photokina exhibitions in 1950, 1951 and 1952. 1977, retirement.

Died in 1992 in Düsseldorf. Her photographs documenting the beginnings of the Federal Republic of Germany (1948-50) are archived in the Museum of Contemporary History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.

The rest of the archives are in the keeping of Irmgard Gepp in Düsseldorf and the North-Rhine-Westphalian Main State Archives in Düsseldorf.
